Lonnie Wheatley, PEORIA, Ariz. (February 24,
2016) – The month of February winds down in tremendous conclusion at
Canyon Speedway Park this Friday and Saturday with the 28th
Annual Desert Classic set to unfold atop the 1/3-mile clay oval.
Following an open practice on Thursday from
7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., two full nights of racing action will
follow with the Arizona Differential IMCA Modifieds battling it out
for a $5,000 winner’s share.
In addition to the IMCA Modifieds, the weekend
double will also include the Allscapes IMCA Stock Cars vs. SCRA
Stock Cars, IMCA Hobby Stocks vs. Renegades presented by Scottsdale
Muffler & Automotive, Dwarf Cars and Micro Sprints.
Racing action goes green at 7:00 p.m. on both
Friday and Saturday.
Reigning Desert Classic champion Ricky
Thornton, Jr., enters the weekend with a hot hand after topping
three of five Winter Challenge feature events that closed out the
month of January. Missouri’s Hunter Marriott took
the other two Winter Challenge wins.
Thornton, Jr., who has captured 24 Modified
feature wins at CSP since the 2014 season, topped the preliminary
portion of the 2014 Desert Classic before Jason Noll took the
Thornton, Jr., and Noll will face a host of
strong contenders from throughout the nation over the course of the
Friday’s card for IMCA Modifieds will consist
of two-lap qualifying and Twin 20’s to set the stage for Saturday’s
$5,000-to-win Desert Classic championship finale.
Thornton, Jr., also reigns as the defending
Desert Classic champion in the Allscapes IMCA Stock Cars vs. SCRA
Stock Cars. George Fronsman captured three Winter
Challenge victories in recent action with defending track champion
Matt Martinez topping the other two.
While Daniel Romero is the defending Desert
Classic winner in the IMCA Hobby Stock vs. Renegade presented by
Scottsdale Muffler & Automotive ranks, Jason Crowe and Paul O’Connor
split Renegade victory honors during Winter Heat action.
The Dwarf Cars and Micro Sprints join in on
the weekend’s Desert Classic action as well.
Danny Wagner and John Isabella enjoyed Dwarf Car honors during
recent Winter Challenge action at CSP while Jarrett Martin took two
of three Micro Sprint wins with Colton Hardy victorious as well.
Tickets for this weekend’s 28th
Annual Desert Classic are just $16 on Friday and $18 on Saturday.
Children ages 7-12 are $6 on Friday and $10 on Saturday with
children 6 and under admitted free. VIP passes
are available for $20 on Friday and $25 on Saturday All Access
Passes $35 on both nights.
