The Fast Five Champions at Dodge City Raceway Park
Lonnie Wheatley, DODGE CITY, Kan. (September 20, 2018) – Dodge City Raceway Park brought the curtains down on the 2018 championship chase season with last Saturday night’s Sixth Annual Jerry Soderberg Memorial Championship event atop the 3/8-mile clay oval in southwest Kansas.
While the championship season has come to a close, the racing doesn’t stop yet at Dodge City Raceway Park as the track hosts the inaugural BMI Racing Products Dodge City 200 Enduro this Saturday night, September 22, and then the return of the World of Outlaws Sprint Car series on Saturday, October 20.
Five racers departed DCRP after last Saturday’s Soderberg Memorial Championship event as track champions including Steven Richardson (Precise Racing Products DCRP Sprint Cars), Nick Link (IMCA Modifieds), Jeff Kaup (IMCA Sport Modifieds), Dusty Witthuhn (IMCA Stock Cars) and Reagan Sellard (IMCA Hobby Stocks).
Liberal’s Steven Richardson used a late-season surge to capture his first Precise Racing Products DCRP Sprint Car championship.
Forty-eight points off the lead pace after five of ten events, Richardson reeled off three consecutive top-five finishes to move to the top of the point charts after the eighth round on August 25 and then finished it off with an eighth-place run in last Saturday’s finale.
Overall, Richardson finished among the top-ten in eight of nine feature events including a triumph in the June 15 Lubbock Wrecker Service DCRP Sprint Car Nationals preliminary feature.
Rolla’s Nick Link matched Richardson’s mark of eight top-ten finishes in nine feature events to snare his second track championship in three years.
After his lone finish outside the top ten in the second of ten rounds of action on May 19, Link kicked off a run of seven consecutive top-ten finishes with a win on May 26. Link finished out his championship campaign with a fourth-place run in the Soderberg Memorial Championship finale.
Woodward, Oklahoma’s Jeff Kaup continued his mastery of Dodge City Raceway Park’s IMCA Sport Modified ranks by notching his fifth track championship in the last six years.
Consistency proved to be key for Kaup with 10 top-five finishes in 11 feature events, more than double the number of top-fives that anyone else among the top ten in points posted this season. Kaup’s lone finish outside the top five was a sixth-place showing in the third round of competition on May 26.
Kaup picked off a pair of wins along the way including a season-opening triumph on May 5 and then on June 16 to run his DCRP win total to 18 victories since the 2012 season.
Bazine’s Dusty Witthuhn emerged atop a hard-fought battle with Chris Oliver to capture the IMCA Stock Car championship.
Witthuhn reeled off back-to-back wins in rounds nine and ten of 13 events and then posted a pair of fourth-place finishes to secure the crown by just eight points. Along the way, Witthuhn finished among the top ten in 11 of 12 features including nine top-fives.
Bucklin’s Reagan Sellard made it two in a row in the IMCA Hobby Stock ranks, racing to nine top-five finishes in ten feature events to take another crown.
In fact, all nine of those finishes for Sellard were on the podium including a pair of wins on May 26 and July 14 along with three runner-up finishes and four third-place showings.
In total, 199 drivers competed in at least one round of 2018 Dodge City Raceway Park championship chase action with 32 different drivers reaching victory lane along the way. The breakdown by division is as follows:
Precise Racing Products DCRP Sprint Cars – 46 competitors, eight different winners in nine features.
IMCA Modifieds – 41 competitors, five different winners in nine features.
IMCA Sport Modifieds – 51 competitors, eight winners in 11 features.
IMCA Stock Cars – 33 competitors, seven winners in 12 features.
IMCA Hobby Stocks – 28 competitors, four winners in ten features.
The “post-season” at Dodge City Raceway Park commences on Saturday night with the BMI Racing Products Dodge City 200 Enduro. The 200-lap or two-hour race, whichever comes first, gets under way with general admission just $5.
