McIntosh Posts Solid Midget Triple
Lonnie Wheatley, BIXBY, Okla. (July 19, 2018) – Last week was a busy one for Cannon McIntosh and the RL Hudson/Toyota-TRD No. 08 Midget team as they took in their first USAC National Midget event before moving on to Missouri for two nights of POWRi National Midget competition.
And the 15-year-old responded by putting it in the show in his USAC debut at Meeker, Oklahoma’s Red Dirt Raceway on Tuesday night and then putting together two solid nights at Grain Valley, Missouri’s Valley Speedway on Friday and Saturday.
Last week’s action began on Tuesday night, July 10, with McIntosh taking on the USAC National Midget series for the first time. The young gun was not rattled at all, racing to a strong second place finish in his heat race to secure his first USAC Midget feature start and then drove a steady race to finish 18th on the night.
“Every car in that feature was fast, those guys are the best around,” McIntosh said of the USAC experience.
McIntosh then took off for two nights of POWRi Midgets “Thunder in the Valley” and very nearly came away with the win in the Friday night opener after charging from eighth to win his heat and earn the pole position.
“We were close to winning that one,” McIntosh says. “I led the first 16 laps and then I hit the cushion and (Ryan) Robinson got by me. Then I hit the cushion again another time or two and fell back.”
McIntosh ultimately settled for an 11th-place finish in the Valley Speedway weekend opener.
In Saturday’s Valley Speedway POWRi card, McIntosh climbed from sixth to third in heat race action to earn the ninth starting position in the feature. From there, he climbed forward a pair of positions to post a seventh-place finish.
“After we started ninth, I fell back a few spots early,” McIntosh recalls. “I got slid and it nearly killed the car. I finally got up to the top and gained a few positions.”
McIntosh and crew will take this weekend off before resuming POWRi West Midget League competition at Oklahoma City’s I-44 Riverside Speedway next Saturday night, July 28.
