Carney Takes on ASCS Sooner Region Saturday at Lawton

Lonnie Wheatley, EL PASO, Texas (August 15, 2019) – A late change of plans will find John Carney II and the Sander Construction/South Plains Auto Transport/Mesilla Valley Transportation No. J2 Sprint Car in action with the ASCS Sooner Region on Saturday night at Lawton Speedway in southwest Oklahoma.

Currently sitting fourth in Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour points, Carney sees it as an ideal opportunity to prepare for the final stretch of National events.

“It will be a good weekend to try out a few things that we have been working on and try to get our car dialed in for the last 12 races or so,” Carney explains.

Carney’s most recent action was at the Knoxville 360 Nationals on August 1-3 and then Oskaloosa’s Southern Iowa Speedway on Tuesday, August 6.

After timing in 11th among the Thursday night preliminary field of 42, Carney missed the transfer from his heat by just one position.  While it put the El Paso native behind the eight ball, he still battled from sixth to claim second and transfer from the Saturday “C” Main and advanced another seven positions before finishing out the weekend 15th in the “B” Main.

“We rolled out with a new car and a new motor and it wasn’t that far off,” Carney explains.  “We just needed to make that transfer.  That put us in the ‘C’ for Saturday and we passed cars in that and then passed more in the ‘B’, so I thought we ran pretty well.  We just had too much of a hole to dig out of.”

Moving on to Oskaloosa on Tuesday, August 6, Carney raced to a ninth-place finish on the night after a fourth-place heat race showing.

“The gear we started the night with wasn’t favorable for how dry it was,” Carney says.  “We tried a few things for the feature and got closer to where we needed to be.”

Saturday’s tilt at Lawton Speedway will mark Carney’s second visit to the quarter-mile red clay oval this season after posting a fifth-place run during Speedweek action in June.  Carney looks for another strong run this weekend.
