Short Track Nationals this Weekend – Entry List at 56 and Counting!

Lonnie Wheatley, LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (October 2, 2018) – I-30 Speedway’s always greatly-anticipated Short Track Nationals is upon us once again as the prestigious event takes place for the 31st time this weekend.

With the entry list already at 56 with more expected, racers from throughout will converge upon Little Rock’s I-30 Speedway for the 31st Annual COMP Cams Short Track Nationals presented by Hoosier Tires that takes place this Thursday through Saturday, October 4-6.

Following a Test ‘N Tune session on Thursday night, October 4, a $2,527-to-win preliminary event on Friday night will precede the Saturday, October 6, $10,041-to-win STN championship finale.

The Friday preliminary feature will cover 27 laps with $2,527 to win to honor Greg Hodnett, who recently lost his life in a crash in central Pennsylvania.  Hodnett originally came from the Mid-South area, cutting his teeth on the local bullrings before ultimately rising to national prominence as a leading force for years in Pennsylvania Posse competition.

Saturday’s $10,041-to-win, $841-to-start STN finale will be 41 laps in honor of Jason Johnson.  “The Ragin’ Cajun” was frequent STN competition, racing his way into eight championship main events over the years and topping the event in 2006.

Each position in Saturday’s 41-lap, $841-to-start championship feature event has been boosted by an additional $41 dollars in honor of Jason Johnson courtesy of Big Show Productions.  Additionally, Marvin and Peggy Pearson have prepared a replica of Jason Johnson’s 2006 STN winning mount that will pace Saturday night’s feature field.

Both nights of racing will feature a full card of heat races, qualifying races and feature events.  While there will be no lock-ins from the Friday preliminary event, the top two combined point earners from Friday and Saturday that don’t race into the Saturday finale will be awarded the 19th and 20th starting positions in the Saturday STN championship finale.  Anyone not competing on Friday night can start no better than 11th in Saturday’s finale.

The current list of entries stands at 56 from 11 different states as well as Canada.  Arkansas and Mississippi lead the way with 12 representatives each Tennessee next with ten and then Texas with seven and Oklahoma with six.  Others states among the entries include Ohio, South Dakota, Louisiana, Illinois, New Mexico and Kanas as well as the Canadian province of Ontario.

Three past winners are among the current entries including five-time and defending STN champion Sammy Swindel, two-time-winner Tony Bruce, Jr., and 1998 victor Tim Crawley.

Eleven of the current entries raced into last year’s STN championship finale.  Along with race winner Sammy Swindell, others looking for back-to-back starts include Sam Hafertepe, Jr. (2nd last year), Tony Bruce, Jr. (5th), Tim Crawley (6th), Derek Hagar (7th), Morgan Turpen (9th), Cody Gardner (11th), Alex Sewell (13th), Brian Bell (16th), Dale Howard (18th) and Howard Moore (19th).
